Dear school community

Board of Management Update

We are delighted to announce that Educate Together have appointed Graham Byrne as the new Chair of the Board of Management.  Graham has been an active member of the school community and has served on the board as a parent nominee since his election in 2017.  Michelle Adebisi has been reappointed by Educate Together and will continue as a patron nominee.

Eamonn O’Hanrahan has been elected as the teacher nominee and will join our principal, Sinead Watson, on the board.

Caoimhe Doyle and Ciaran Buckley have been elected as the parent nominees on the board after the election results were counted last night.  There was a very high number of votes cast and we would like to thank all the candidates for putting their names forward.  We hope you will continue to be involved and engaged members of our school community.

The new board will meet in the next few weeks to appoint two community nominees.

The new board’s term of office runs from December 1 2019 for a period of four years and we thank them for their willingness to support our school and wish them all the best in their roles.

A Note from Graham Byrne

The Board of Management would like to take this opportunity to thank Rob and Koryne for their dedication and commitment over the last few years.

Rob served two terms on the board, the first as treasurer and the second as Chair. During Rob’s term as Chair, the school has undertaken the move from Marine House into our current building and has overseen the expansion and establishment into the fantastic community of children, staff and parents we have today.

This was an important period in the school’s development and required a very proactive and dedicated effort from all involved and we appreciate how central Rob was to this process.

Outgoing also is Koryne Smyth who has served a number of important roles on the board, including treasurer and more lately, has managed supporting maintenance and improvements to the building. Her commitment to this has been done with energy and positivity and we appreciate the hard work put in in ensuring we have a comfortable environment for the children and staff

I am looking forward to building on this as the school goes from strength to strength and wish to reiterate my thanks to Rob in providing an excellent platform for me to act as successor and allow the Board of Management to continue on supporting WETNS over the next 4 years.

Thanks

Graham

Science Week 2019/2020 – A huge thank you to everyone who helped make Science Week in WETNS so fantastic. Thank you, Lisa, for reading out ‘Question of the Day’ every day. They were really difficult questions to get us thinking like; ‘Why does the moon change shape every day?’ (This question was thought of by a child in Junior Infants) and ‘What animal would you protect and why?’.

Thank you to the children and their parents/guardians for taking part in the Design and Make Challenge to make musical instruments.  We were amazed by the response to this challenge. It was very difficult to pick winners, but we were helped by two visiting principals from local schools.

Thank you to Sixth Class and their teachers who showed some fabulous science experiments to the rest of the school.

Thank you to 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class and their teachers who took part in the Science Quiz where mixed teams battled it out for a place on the leader board.

Thank you to Alan’s team of helpers who co-ordinated and explained the Science Stations; Float and Sink, Air Canons and Seaweed Exploration.

Lots of fun was had throughout the week and hopefully lots of learning too.

We are already looking forward to Science Week 2020/2021! Alan and Sally.

Laptops Donation– We are delighted to announce that the school recently received a donation of 15 reconditioned touchscreen Dell laptops. The donation was organised by parent, Adrian McAllister, through his employer, SalesForce. These laptops will be configured and set up for use in our classrooms by the end of term, and our children will be able to use them to support their learning across all curriculum subjects. We would like to thank Adrian and SalesForce for the opportunities that this donation has afforded us to further embed ICT into our teaching and learning. Sharon Hogan,Teacher

Lost Property – We have a large amount of Lost Property here at the school and would really like to return all the coats, jackets, hoodies, cardigans, t-shirts, hats and gloves to their owners. Please check the lost property rail at drop off in the mornings. All unclaimed property will be donated to charity on the last day of term.

PTA Update – Winter Fair 2019 was a huge success, raising €5,401 for our school. I want to sincerely thank everyone who gave up their time to help out in anyway. A big thank you to those who stayed back to help clean up. I want to say a special thank you to Lisa in the office for all she did to help with the Winter Fair. We had an excellent array of stall holders this year. Our hot dog and popcorn stall were a welcomed addition to the fair. I would like to thank the families and businesses of the town who donated to our monster raffle. Raffle prizes and winners were notified on Monday. List of winners on our noticeboard. If you have not already done so please collect your prizes at the school office.

For the 2nd year running our Vintage Glitz was a big success on the day, more Vintage Glitz to come for Winter Fair 2020!!!

School Calendar -Thank you for your calendar orders. All of the classes have been photographed and we are currently working with the printer to produce this year’s calendar.
