Dear School Community

Important Dates

IMPORTANT RE SCHOOL CLOSURE Please note that the school will be closed on Friday 3rd June due to teacher training on the New Primary Language Curriculum

Mid-Term Break – The school will be closed for the Mid-Term Break from Monday 6th June to Friday 10th June inclusive.  The children will finish at their usual finishing times on Thursday 2nd June.

Thurs 26th May – County Photos will be at the school on Thursday 26th May to take the children’s school photos. A proof of the photos taken will be sent home after the mid-term should you wish to purchase.

Wed 29th June – 6th Class Graduation will take place from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday 29th June here at the school.  We will host a graduation with pupils, staff and families together. Reminder to please send in a photograph of your child on their first day in school, or a photo from their junior infant year. Also, any photographs you may have of your child’s class during their time at WETNS.  Please email all photographs to [email protected].

Class Splits – In line with school policy we are starting the process of reconstituting classes, which will be finalised before the end of the term and communicated to you ahead of the summer holidays. We are mindful of the fact that children in the senior end of school are now nearing the end of their time in WETNS and are well settled in their current classes. Therefore, there will be a limited number of changes in 5th and 6th class. We are also keeping to a minimum the changes to junior infants and we look forward to them having more opportunities to mix with each other next school year. If you would like to inform us of any circumstances or considerations for your child as part of this process please email your feedback to [email protected].

School Tours – School Tour Permission and payment requests have been sent out to all classes. Reminder that all school tours must be paid in full by Friday 27th May.  Please log in to Aladdin to give consent and make payment.  Thank you.  If your child is not attending their school tour please email [email protected] to let us know. Thank you.

Attendance and Punctuality – We are delighted to see an overall attendance improvement this term. It has been a very challenging school year with higher than normal levels of absences due to Covid for both staff and pupils. In line with school policy we are obliged to report to Tusla when a child misses more than 20 days of school, we will shortly be sending out an email to all families in relation to this. You can also view your child’s attendance on Aladdin, which we ask you to keep up to date.

Please be reminded that the school day starts at 9am, and it is lovely to see so many pupils arriving between 8.40 and 9.00. Any pupil arriving after this time is recorded as late on Aladdin, this is recorded as minutes late. Again this enables you to keep an eye on your child’s punctuality, and if necessary, take steps to improve punctuality. Lateness disturbs the learning of others and a child can miss fundamental concepts, particularly in subjects such as Maths, which are frequently taught first thing in the morning.  Many thanks for your support

Mile Run – Congratulations to all of the children from 3rd to 6th class who took part in the “Mile Run” last week. The children walked to and from our school to the Murrough and ran a mile as well, so there were plenty of tired legs by the end of the day!  It was great to take part in competitions against other schools again and it was lovely to hear the teachers compliment all of the children on their excellent attitude and impeccable behaviour.

Write a Book Competition – This year our two 4th classes entered the annual “Write a Book” competition. There were some outstanding books, which the teachers really enjoyed reading. A big congratulations to all the children for the time and effort they put into their books and in particular to Emily and Eoin who were their class winners. We hope that these budding authors keep up their writing!

Athletics Run – Thursday 19th May – We wish all the best to our school teams this week. On Thursday, children from 3rd-6th class will be competing in the annual Greystones Shoreline athletics competition, where they will get the chance to compete in long distance running, sprints, running relays, high jump, long jump and javelin throwing.

Tennis Competition – Friday 20th May – On Friday eight children from 5th and 6th class, will compete after school, in a tennis doubles competition at Wicklow Tennis club. It is great that we have the opportunity to compete against other schools again and hopefully we will be lucky enough to get some fine weather too!

Awesome Walls – Please note that the Awesome Walls Event is not an event that has been organised by Wicklow Educate Together. Our only requirement is that we are aware of any absences at any given time so that we are in line with our policy in relation to attendance.  As this is not an event of ours, we would always recommend that parents seek clarification from the event organisers that they are offering full insurance coverage for all attendees and participants along with sufficient supervision for the duration of the event.

World Book Day – We would like to thank all the parents, guardians and the students for their generosity during our World Book day fundraising event. There was great fun had in school on the day and we also raised vital funds to update our classroom libraries. The local book shop was fantastic in helping us source our new collection of beautiful books for all of the students to enjoy. Photo attached.

Ducklings in Jnr Infants – Junior Infants Blue had an exciting few days with the hatching of four ducklings in the classroom. It’ll be hard to settle back into a normal school day after such an exciting start to the week! Photos attached.

PTA UPDATE

Coffee Morning – Thursday 2nd June – The PTA will host a Coffee Morning for parents/guardians in the school hall on Thursday 2nd June after school drop-off for an hour. This is a good opportunity to meet other parents/guardians from the school community.  We are calling on all bakers to produce some lovely baked goods to be enjoyed by all at the coffee morning!  Reminder that we are a nut-free school.  We would greatly appreciate some helpers on the day to assist with set-up, tea/coffee making and clean up afterwards.  Please email [email protected] if you are available to help out. We will have a collection bucket in the hall and also one outside the school office.  All funds raised will go towards new classroom games and activity supplies.

PTA Raffle – The PTA will hold a raffle as part of their coffee morning.  Tickets can be purchased on the day and will also be available the week of May 30th.  Further details to follow.
